Sept. 1: Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

  • Today is the day to celebrate our orange feline friends! Here are some fun facts about gingers:
  • Most ginger cats are male (the ratio is about 80% male to 20% female)
  • All orange cats are tabbies (tabby is actually a coat pattern, not a breed)
  • Winston Churchill owned an orange tabby named Tango.
  • Gingers come in four distinct coat patterns: spotted, mackerel, striped and ticked.
  • Orange tabbies can be found in a variety of cat breeds like Maine Coon, Persian, Oriental shorthair and American Bobtail

Sept. 4: Gallery of Cats

Check out this fun cat art show in Oakland, California featuring the work of several cat portrait artists. It will be a celebration with music, art and cats! Takes place at the Firehouse Art Collective/Lottie Rose Art Gallery. Learn more at thegalleryofcats.com.

Sept. 11: 9th Annual Catio Tour

Don’t miss this popular, one-of-a-kind event in Portland, Oregon, hosted by the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and Portland Audubon. The 9th Annual Catio Tour will showcase eight distinct outdoor cat enclosures. From DIY to designer, the catios in NE Portland, SE Portland and Vancouver will inspire great ideas that fit any budget and space. This self-guided tour was created to inspire cat owners to build or buy  an outdoor cat enclosure to keep cats safe from outdoor hazards while also protecting wildlife from cat predation. This year’s event has two tour options available – in-person ($10) and online video ($15), both of which take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To learn more and to register, visit CatsSafeAtHome.org.

Sept. 12: 23rd Pet Rock Festival

The 23rd annual Pet Rock Festival continues to put a spotlight on the animal welfare organizations of New England that work to promote kindness to animals. Pet Rock Fest features live music, performances and games for kids, author signings, photos of your pets, animal mascots, vegetarian food court, games for kids, a cat photo contest, doggie waterpark, demonstrations, exhibits, vendors and, most importantly, hundreds of nonprofit groups devoted to animal welfare causes. Goes from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Learn more at petrockfest.org.

Sept. 25-26: Skyway Cat Club Cat Show

Join this Cat Lovers’ Paradise and meet more than 25 cat breeds, including Persians, Maine Coons, Bengals, Orientals, long-hairs and no hairs. Adoptable cats and kittens will be available through attending rescue groups. Shop for unique cat items like furniture, jewelry, cat beds, blankets, toys and more.
