Six kittens, rescued from the shelter, embarked on a mission to find the coziest laps this holiday season.

About a month ago, Asa, a volunteer for Kane’s K9s and Animal Rescue, welcomed six kittens into her care—a variety pack, each with different colors and markings.

The kittens were rescued from a local Humane Society and arrived at Kane’s K9s with stomach troubles and declining health. Asa immediately provided supportive care, helping them eat as they didn’t have an appetite.

Through her painstaking care and many sleepless nights, the kittens began to turn a corner.

“Between syringe feeding them all and constantly cleaning up after them, those days were rough, to say the least,” Asa shared.

Trusting her instincts, she advocated for the kittens until they received the care they needed to thrive. Once they regained their strength, they expressed it with a chorus of meows—some squeaky, some crunchy. Matsutake, one of the torties, had a charming raspy meow.

Craving affection, they’d immediately bolt to their foster mom when she entered the room, greeting her with a symphony of meows and purrs.

“All the different meows and so much purring. They may not be the loudest kittens I’ve fostered, but they may be the squeakiest.”

“They have so much energy now, actually eating on their own, and gained weight for the first time.”

The kittens (Shiitake, Shimeji, Maitake, Nameko, Enoki, and Matsutake) were named after mushrooms. Once they were on the mend, they quickly grew into plump little bundles, almost too big to all fit in their foster mom’s lap.

Even in deep sleep, their purr motors never seemed to stop. They preferred napping on their foster mom, often piling on top of each other despite having plenty of cozy cat beds and blankets around.

Enoki, the orange tabby, stood out as the only boy in the litter.

He was in the worst shape, barely eating, but with proper care, he made a remarkable comeback. Not only did he catch up in size, but his vibrant orange tabby personality shone through.

“I was the most worried about him not making it when I first picked them up, but look at his round, healthy belly now.”

Whenever Asa sat down, all six of them would trickle onto her lap, nestling in one by one until it overflowed with purring kittens.

Once they were ready for adoption, four kittens were swiftly matched with their perfect homes. “Shiitake and Matsutake have been adopted together. They have settled into their new home quite quickly. They are so spoiled and loved already.”

Nameko and Maitake will also share their first holiday season together. “They adjusted to their new home immediately and have been running around, snuggling, purring up a storm, and just being their sweet selves.”

Meanwhile, Enoki and his sister Shimeji are still looking for a home to share this Christmas.

Thanks to their foster mom and the support of her rescue, these kittens flourished into beautiful young cats with loud purr motors and joyful spirits.

While waiting for a forever home, Enoki and Shimeji continue to cuddle, often wrapping their arms around each other like two peas in a pod.
