When a dog is adopted, it is supposed to be in existence for the rest of its life. Sometimes understandable circumstances occur, and a dog must be rehomed. Dogs can be relocated to family members and friends in an ethical manner. As animal lovers, we hope that a dog owner understands that giving up a dog at a kill shelter is like sentencing him to death– but it happens all the time. Being abandoned by his family literally shattered him, for one dog who was crazily devoted to his people.

This formerly happy dog was devastated. He sat in his kennel, despondently staring at the wall, and refused to interact with anybody. This concerned shelter workers because he would not make eye contact with potential adopters, unlike the other dogs who wagged their tails as people walked passed them. What if he never found a home? The depressed dog waited for his family to return for him. It was clear what it meant. While he stayed away from people as they went by, he inspected them from the corner of his kennel to see if it was them. And when he finally realized these people were strangers, he would go back to his sad spot and lay back down.
