Good To Know

Did you know that in the last three years, birthday parties for felines and canines have become more popular than baby showers and gender reveal celebrations? Unique dog harness and accessory pioneers Topdog have looked thoroughly at what people have been searching for in recent years and the results are in!

  • Each month the UK makes 19% more searches for birthday parties and gifts for their cats and dogs than searches related to gender reveals and baby showers

  • Dog owners are more generous, with 76,000 monthly searches relating to dog birthdays and gifts, compared to 48,000 for cat birthday-related search terms

  • Over the last three years, searches for gender reveal and baby showers have dropped by 34%.

In the UK, pet owners seem to be prioritising their furry friends’ birthday celebrations over human occasions, with a striking number of online searches attesting to this trend. On average, the UK witnesses approximately 124,000 monthly online searches relating to birthday parties and gifts for pets, outpacing an estimated 104,000 searches related to gender reveals and baby showers.

Interestingly, dog owners appear to be the more party-inclined group. Out of these pet-related searches, around 76,000 revolve around dog birthdays and gifts, while cat birthday-related search terms account for 48,000 searches. Questions such as “How do I celebrate my dog’s birthday” and “How do you give a cat a birthday” frequently surface on platforms like AlsoAsked.

Gender reveal parties and baby showers are experiencing a decline in popularity in the UK, according to Google search data, with a 28% drop in gender reveal search terms in the past year and a 21% decrease for baby showers over the last three years. Despite this trend, and public sentiment leaning towards these celebrations being seen as “tacky” or “stupid,” there remains an online interest in them, particularly on social media. Celebrities like Khloe Kardashian continue to fuel these trends, which originated in the US.

“More and more people are choosing to throw birthday bashes for their furry pals rather than traditional events like baby showers or gender reveals.” Says Topdog co-owner Vanessa Applin.

“Our pets are more than just animals, they’re part of the family. Plus, who can resist those cute pet party pics blowing up on social media? Celebrating our pups’ special day isn’t just a trend, it’s a tribute to the amazing bond we share with our four-legged buddies.”
