About Omlet

Omlet Cardboard Cat Scratching Post - product packaging

Omlet started when four college men enrolled in a design school in London and realized their passion for pet products. Their mindset for creating new pet products would be to spark the question “Why hasn’t it always been done this way?”. When the Cardboard Cat Scratching Post was designed, practicality and sustainability were top priorities. The team at Omlet wanted to create a cat scratcher that was engaging, but also eco-friendly. With most cat scratchers, once our feline friends have done their work, the entire cat scratcher has to be thrown away. With this product, only the portion that gets scratched needs to be replaced. The bamboo base and steel pole will stand the test of time. The cardboard can be recycled and a refill can be ordered easily. With Omlet’s Cardboard Scratching Post, your kitties can get their needed mental stimulation, while you contribute to a greener planet. It’s a win-win!

Overview

Pricing

Depending on the option you choose, the Omlet Cardboard Cat Scratching Post ranges from $49-$99. The most affordable option is the wall-mounted post while the tall version is the most expensive. My first thought was that this seemed expensive for a cat-scratching post. However, this design is meant to be refillable. Many, cheaper posts become so worn down that the entire product has to be thrown away. However, with Omlet’s scratching post, you can purchase new cardboard to replace the old stack that will be beaten up over time. This serves as a great investment and makes more sense financially. The bulk of the price value comes from the durable bamboo base and steel frame.

Contents

Everything you need comes in one box. The bamboo base, steel pole, cardboard stacks, hardware, and simple instruction packet all come packaged and ready to go. If you’re more of a visual learner, Omlet provides a “how-to-build” video on their website.

Durability

I have 4 cats whose favorite pastime is scratching up my furniture. My first thought was, “This cardboard doesn’t stand a chance.” To my surprise, it holds up very well! My cats will constantly scratch and even bite the cardboard post and it still looks practically brand new. Plus, I was afraid there would be cardboard pieces scattered throughout the house, but I have yet to see any evidence.

Quality

Now, I know I made a comment about how this scratching post is on the expensive side. Also, I feel like “quality” and “cardboard” are rarely intertwined. However, once the product arrives at your door, the scratching post’s quality justifies its price point. A solid, bamboo frame paired with a steel pole means your cats can climb, jump, and claw as much as they want and it won’t budge.

Is the Cardboard Cat Scratching Post a Good Value?

Absolutely! The decrease in the wear and tear of our furniture alone makes this product a great addition to our home. As a veterinary technician, I also understand the importance of mental stimulation for pets. Scratching posts allow our cats to exercise their minds and release endorphins. The durable cardboard is great for scratching and rubbing their faces to mark their territory. I often find my cats sleeping right on the bamboo base because they are tired from interacting with it. Preservation of expensive furniture combined with healthy pet stimulation is a win in my book!

Our Experience With Omlet

My husband and I run a small zoo with 4 cats and 3 dogs. Needless to say, our furniture has seen better days. The items in our home get put through the wringer daily. For whatever reason, we were lucky enough to adopt 4 cats who spend nearly every waking moment sharpening their claws on our couch, carpet, and banisters.

I was eager to see if Omlet’s scratching post would be of interest to them. I feared that my cats would think, “We have so much fun tearing up Mom’s furniture, why change our habits?”.

Thankfully, the exact opposite happened. As soon as the box arrived, my cats became curious. I took out the materials to begin assembly, and even before putting the post together, my cats were rubbing their faces along the cardboard. Great start! Assembly was straightforward. Although, I did peak at the directions to ensure I wouldn’t mess anything up. The cardboard comes in two separate wrapped stacks. The instructions advised you not to remove the wrapping until the end. However, when I went to slide the cardboard stacks onto the pole, I found it difficult as some of the sleeves had shifted so it wasn’t perfectly aligned. I ended up removing the wrapping and grabbing several sleeves at a time to slide down the poll.

Once everything was put together, it took all of about 5 seconds for my cats to investigate.

Almost instantly, two of my cats, Cheddar and Cornelius, started scratching the post. I felt instant relief and realized we would be able to get another year or two out of our furniture before having to replace it. It had gotten to a point where our dog, Annie, was unintentionally trained to correct the cats when scratching the couch. My husband or I would go to correct our cats and Annie would beat us to it. Our cats utilize Omlet’s scratching post so frequently, that we have had to “un-train” Annie and assure her that this product is ok to destroy. We are very happy with how stimulating this product is for our cats. They all interact with it and it is now the center of their playtime together.

Conclusion

The Omlet Cardboard Cat Scratching Post has been an excellent addition to our home. Its durable construction and eco-friendly design have not only provided our cats with an outlet for their natural scratching instincts but have also contributed to a cleaner and more sustainable household environment. Its triangle, 3-sided design means it can accommodate multiple cats at once. The sturdy, bamboo base allows the cats to rough house as much as they want without the concern of it falling over. This is not the first product I have had the pleasure of testing from Omlet and I am impressed every time! My husband and I (and furniture) are happier. My cats are happier. Mission accomplished. Thanks, Omlet!
