Good To Know

Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone affected by the destructive Hurricane Milton. We are especially thankful for the first responders and rescuers who have been working tirelessly in its aftermath.

Emergency workers have been devoted to saving animals displaced by the storm. In one particularly touching incident, a firefighter in Florida rescued a dog from rising floodwaters, and the dog’s eyes conveyed profound gratitude .

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue was among the numerous Florida departments carrying out essential, life-saving tasks following Hurricane Milton last week.

Captain Dusty Mascaro, part of the department’s search and rescue team, was on duty when he spotted a Bernese mountain dog stranded in deep floodwaters. Without hesitation, he stepped in to help, carrying the dog to safety. Safe inside the vehicle, the dog’s appreciative gaze was captured in a memorable photograph.

Sharing the moment on Facebook, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue described it as a “beautiful moment of pure gratitude and love.” The heartfelt rescue touched many online, with people moved by the dog’s thankful expression. One person commented, “Look at that dog’s eyes – he knows he was saved.”

Another remarked, “This is proof of gratitude for saving the dog’s life! It should be made into a poster and framed.”

Some suggested that Captain Mascaro should adopt the dog, though it’s unclear if the dog already has a home.

This was just one of many animal rescues the department has carried out since Hurricane Milton. On October 11, they shared on Facebook that they have rescued 104 pets so far, ensuring that no one—human or animal—is left behind.

They expressed their gratitude, saying, “We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve and protect all members of our community, big and small.”
