AUSTRALIA’S Taronga Zoo has added two precious meerkat pups to their meerkat mob. Born on 18 August, the meerkats have just begun venturing outside their nest box. Vets have not yet confirmed their gender, but keepers suspect that they are both females. The pups are the second litter for proud parents Nairobi and Maputo and their big sister Serati is playing a key role in caring for them. Under the watchful eyes of the whole mob – or gang – the meerkats are learning the crucial life skills for a meerkat, including learning how to dig, find food and – most importantly – sentry duty, when meerkats scan the surrounding area for potential threats.
