ACCORDING TO Squishy’s owners, Joe and Sally, their dog is just a typical coonhound – but on social media, Squishy has brought many people joy with his Instagram page. Squishy was born with short spine syndrome, a condition so rare that there are only about 25 to 30 dogs in the world that have it. The cervical spine compression makes it look like the dog has no neck. Due to the shortened spine, the dog also has a shorter body with regular sized legs as it doesn’t affect their limbs. Squishy and his brother, Buzz, who also had the condition, were born to a coonhound breeder family. The family kept the canines secret so it wouldn’t hurt their business, but they gave up the dogs eventually. Joe and Sally, who initially only planned to foster Squishy for a week, decided to adopt him in the end. He has become part of the family with four other dogs. Sally said: “Squishy is the boss. He rules everybody in the house. He’s quirky, dominant and very lovable.”
