ASPCA Cat Advocate of the Year
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Annual Humane Awards celebrates human and animal heroes who make a difference and improve animal welfare.
The 2022 Cat Advocate of the Year is F.O.R.W.A.R.D. (Feline and Offenders Rehabilitation with Affection, Reformation and Dedication), based in Indianapolis, Indiana. F.O.R.W.A.R.D. pairs cats and kittens (some with behavioral or medical challenges) with incarcerated individuals who provide daily care, medical care and companionship.
The cats are housed in customized living spaces at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. Many of the cats are later adopted into forever homes, and the caretakers also learn responsibility and pet care skills.
