The final days of Ace’s life were spent with the Sonoma County shelter, where he was handed over at the age of 19. It was also around this time that the California wildfires started burning out of control. He ended up at the SPCA more than 150 miles away with little chance of survival. But foster mom Bonnie noticed how energetic he seemed and recognized she had to do something about it.

She volunteered to take the senior dog into her home until a permanent home could be found for him. Ace would become more and more at ease over time, and he’d start to shed his shell. He then bonded with the other foster dogs in the household.

But there was one problem: Ace had a health issue that made the adoption of another dog impossible for him. The adoption applications started coming in for Ace after that. Bonnie felt sorry knowing how much she would miss him when he was gone, but it was because of this that he was “failed” as a foster pet! Bonnie decided to adopt him so he could spend the rest of his days with her where she knew he’d be happy and safe.
